Introduction

This one day course is design to help delegates understand the Health and Safety responsibilities and legal implications of bringing a contractor onto their own or their clients’ premises.

The Managing Client/Contractor Relationships course reflects the principles embodied in:

• Health and Safety at Work etc. Act
• Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations
• Case Law Regina –v- Octel
• The HSE’s ‘Successful health and safety management’ (HSG65); BS 8800; and OHSAS 18001.

Aims

The course aims to provide those responsible for selecting and control of contractors with adequate knowledge to ensure they meet their legal obligations. Taking into account the following:

• Legal and Moral aspects
• Procurement and/or pre tender actions
• Scope of work to be undertaken and the competency of contractors selected.
• Obtaining, reviewing and approving of the contractors risk assessments and method statements including permit issues.
• Hazard information required to be exchanged by both parties
• Responsibilities to ensure compliance
• Communication with contractors and clients
• Actions to be taken when things go wrong
• Site arrangements agreed and in place before work commences
• What inspections, audit and review systems need to be in place

Objectives

On successful completion of the course, delegates should be able to:

• Prepare and assess a contractors safety capability
• Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of safe contracting
• Conduct a contractor induction
• State the benefits of passports and permits to work.
• Conduct a contractor review meeting

Module 1 – Overview and introduction to the programme
